Choosing a microneedling pen for med spas

A practical checklist for owners who already offer microneedling and are deciding which FDA-cleared pen to own. The worked example is the Apex Pro Microneedling Pen, a disclosed Med Spa Club partner sold by TruSkin Aesthetic Group.

Buy the pen the way you buy any other room device

Most practices looking at a microneedling pen already have the service on the menu. The decision is not whether patients ask for microneedling. It is whether the pen, the cartridges, and the service terms are the ones you want to keep paying for.

This guide stays on those commercial and regulatory checks. It does not rank brands, and it does not describe treatment results. Where a figure belongs to Apex Pro, it is labeled as Apex Pro’s published term.

Who it is sold to

A microneedling pen for licensed practices

Confirm the buyer first. Apex Pro is sold to licensed US med spas, dermatology practices, and plastic surgery practices. It is a professional pen, not a consumer device.

If the practice does not already microneedle, choosing a pen is the second question. The first is whether the service belongs on the menu at all. This guide assumes the service is already one you offer, or one you have decided to offer.

The wording

What FDA-cleared means before you buy

Apex Pro is an FDA-cleared Class II microneedling device.

That is the sentence to ask for, in those words. Cleared is the correct term. Do not let a quote, a slide, or a rep swap in “FDA-approved.” The 510(k) number is printed with the seller details at the bottom of this page. Ask to see it on the quote as well.

This guide does not list cleared indications. They are not confirmed for publication here, so a careful buyer should not treat a marketing page as the indications for use. Ask the seller for the indications document separately, and read it before you train the team.

The workday

Specs that change how the room runs

Depth, speed, power, and the cartridge are the specs that show up on a full book. For the Apex Pro Microneedling Pen they are:

Depth

0.1 to 2.5 mm, adjustable in 0.1 mm steps.

Speed and motor

3 treatment speeds. Motor up to 9,000 RPM.

Power

Battery, with optional AC power.

Cartridges

Single-use sterile 12-pin and 36-pin. The 12-pin is described for smaller areas, including the eyes, nose, and lip. The 36-pin is described for broader areas.

Training

Included. Support is based in the US.

If the pen is down

Lifetime device warranty, subject to terms. A 24-hour loaner ships if you notify TruSkin by 2 p.m. Eastern.

The 12-pin and 36-pin notes describe the cartridges. They are not a list of cleared indications.

The number that repeats

Price the cartridges before you price the pen

The device is a one-time check. A sterile cartridge is on every treatment, so the cartridge price is the cost that compounds. Apex Pro cartridges are $36 each in a box of 15, $34 in a box of 30, and $32 in a box of 60. That averages about $34. A written consumable price guarantee holds the price.

The pen is $4,500, or $2,500 when you trade in a competing professional pen you own outright. Starter cartridges are included with the trade-in. If you currently pay about $85 a cartridge, the gap versus about $34 is about $51 a treatment. That $85 figure is a calculator default. Use your invoice, not the default.

The box table and the illustrative volume math are on the cartridge and price page.

Switching

How a trade-in should work

If you already own a professional pen, ask three things before you like the new price. Do you own the device outright? Will someone confirm the trade-in value in writing before you pay? Can you keep treating on the current pen until the new one is installed and the team is trained?

For Apex Pro, the answers on file are yes, yes, and yes. The $2,500 price requires a device you own outright. TruSkin confirms the value in writing. You stay on your current pen until install and training are done, so the schedule does not stop. The steps are on the Apex Pro trade-in page.

The exit

Read the trial before you rely on it

A trial is useful only if you know when it ends and what you have to send back. The Apex Pro Challenge is a money-back trial. The purchase includes the pen and 10 cartridges. The trial ends after 10 cartridges are used or 30 days pass, whichever comes first. The refund is issued once the pen and all unused cartridges are successfully returned.

That describes the money. It does not promise a clinical result, and it is not a reason to skip the warranty terms or the cartridge price.

Questions to put on any quote

  1. Who is allowed to buy it, and is your practice in that group?
  2. What is the exact FDA sentence, and what is the 510(k) number?
  3. What do cartridges cost in each box size, and is that price held in writing?
  4. What is the device price with a trade-in, and without one?
  5. Do you have to own your current device outright?
  6. Can the room keep treating while the new pen is installed and the team is trained?
  7. What does the warranty cover, in the written terms?
  8. How fast does a loaner ship, and what time do you have to call?
  9. Is training included, and where is support based?
  10. When does a trial end, and what has to come back for a refund?

For Apex Pro, the answers that are confirmed today live on the pen page, the cartridge page, and the trade-in page. You can also read device details on the Apex Pro site. Anything not written there, including specific cleared indications, is not confirmed on this site.

Buyer's guide questions

What should a med spa check before buying a microneedling pen?
Confirm who the pen is sold to, the exact FDA wording, cartridge price by box size, whether that price is held in writing, the device price with and without a trade-in, the warranty terms, the loaner cutoff, whether training is included, and how a trial ends. Compare cartridge cost with your own invoice.
What does FDA-cleared mean on a microneedling pen?
Use the supplier's exact sentence. For this pen it is: Apex Pro is an FDA-cleared Class II microneedling device. Cleared is the correct word. This guide does not list cleared indications, because those are not confirmed for publication here. The 510(k) number is printed with the seller details at the bottom of the page.
Why does cartridge price matter when choosing a pen?
The pen is a one-time cost. A sterile cartridge is used on every treatment. Apex Pro cartridges are $36, $34, or $32 by box size, about $34 on average, with a written price guarantee. If you pay about $85 today, the gap is about $51 a treatment. That figure is illustrative. Check it against your invoice.
What should I ask about a warranty and a loaner?
Ask for the warranty terms in writing, and ask what ships if the pen is down on a treatment day. Apex Pro has a lifetime device warranty, subject to terms. A 24-hour loaner ships if you notify TruSkin by 2 p.m. Eastern. Training is included, and support is based in the US.
How can a practice try a pen without guessing at the exit?
Read the trial clock and the return rules before you buy. The Apex Pro Challenge purchase includes the pen and 10 cartridges. The trial ends after 10 cartridges are used or 30 days pass, whichever comes first. The refund is issued once the pen and all unused cartridges are successfully returned. That is a commercial term, not a promise of results.
Where are the Apex Pro prices written down?
The pen page, the cartridge and price page, and the trade-in page on Med Spa Club state the published figures: $4,500 standard, $2,500 with a qualifying trade-in, and cartridges at $32 to $36. Every purchase is still a written quote. There is no online checkout.
